What to eat and drink after vomiting

Many patients who visit peptiko.gr ask us what they can eat and drink after vomiting. Here is some useful information in the following text.

Start with:

  • Try to drink a tablespoon of water. Wait 30 minutes and if you do not vomit or have diarrhea again, drink 2 tablespoons of water.
  • Continue to increase the amount of water every 30 minutes for about 3 hours and then start taking clear liquids or electrolytes (Almora sachets).

Clear liquids are:

  • Water
  • Sports drinks (contain electrolytes and sugars, so it would be better to dilute them with water in a half-and-half ratio)
  • Jelly
  • Tea
  • Broth

Continue with:

  • Continue to consume clear liquids until you feel that you can tolerate them well, are not vomiting, and are starting to feel hungry.
  • Then gradually try to consume solid food (vomit recovery diet).
  • The amount of food should be small at first and many times (6-8) a day.
  • Return to your regular diet as soon as you feel you can tolerate it, but not suddenly and quickly.

Vomiting recovery diet:

  • Banana
  • Rice
  • Apple juice
  • Toast
  • Compote
  • Boiled vegetables (carrot, zucchini, mashed potatoes)
  • Crackers
  • Dry cereals (oats)
  • Pasta without sauce
  • Boiled chicken fillet

Avoid eating or drinking the following for several days after vomiting:

  • Milk (mainly cow’s milk)
  • Alcohol
  • Pizza
  • Fatty, fried, oily, spicy / spicy foods
  • Raw fruits and vegetables
  • Salad

Caution! Do not consume aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (Mesulid, Voltaren, etc.). If you are in pain, you can take a small amount of paracetamol (1-2 tablets Depon, Panadol, Apotel).
